I run Debian(-derived) since 23 June o' 2022, when I decided I'm not willing to be fucked by Microsoft anymore. I hapilly ran Linux Mint 20.3, later LMDE 5 and then rolled along with Debian 11 (And later 12). Currently running Devuan on my desktop. However Victoria, my server, doesn't run Linux anymore. She runs NetBSD. Furthermore, on holidays I gonna switch to FreeBSD on main desktop and I already avoid doing new Linux installations when possible. So the question is, why? While I'm right now good on Devuan, it doesn't prevent me from seeing what's happening to Linux in general... Shortly, it is facing slow but horrible "Windowsization", so it's "better" for mainstream. What I mean by "Windowsation"?: - Feature bloat and abiding to trends rather than preferring simplicity and performance, resulting in half-working software unnecessarily eating all available resources - Obfuscation of lower levels so nobody wants to modify it and is forced to use oversimplified GUIs which treats them like a bloodey idiot - Abandoning "Do one thing right", resulting in "I do and fail at everything" software like systemd - Adding unnecessary bloat on "It's on Windows" basis, like systemd's BSOD (I'm serious) - Pushing-in hype-powered incompatible with everything "modern replacements" that fix nothing and usually bring even more problems. Wayland, I'm lookin at ye! - Notorious (and progressing) attempts to unify (remove freedom from) "Wild West" Linux And much more for sure I just dunno remember right now. Though I think crap from above is more than enough There are still sane Linux distributions out there, however hell knows how long they'll survive without getting infested with mainstream dementia. It's just plain impossible to keep all of this crap away if majority violently pushes it in... As non-Debian Linuxes are a no-go for me (either already enshittified or just unfit for me needs), I decided if I want to keep my computing sane, there's no other way than swithing to BSDs. These are hard indeed (esp. OpenBSD), however once mastered bring huge benefits in form of stability and solutions not found on most Linuxes (rc.d, ports...) T'was all, mates
